Letha Nigro, a Direct Support Professional (DSP) at the Stone Quarry community home, recently earned professional credentials by completing the DSP I Micro-Credential courses offered through the Springbrook Training & Education Program (STEP).
Letha was inspired to step outside of her comfort zone when she decided to participate in the micro-credentialing program. She enhanced many of her skills, and with the support from her manager, she was successful. Letha shares that she gained more knowledge in human services and earned a pay raise.
As she looks forward to where her new credentials will take her, she offers a piece of advice for others considering participating in the program: “[It’s important] to take a chance to build a relationship with your classmates,” adding, “Create an online group chat to communicate and help each other.” Congratulations on your success, Letha!
Tanya Torres, a Direct Support Professional (DSP) at the Swart Hollow community home, earned professional credentials by participating in the DSP I Micro-Credential courses offered through the Springbrook Training & Education Program (STEP).
Inspiration comes from many places, and for Tanya, her nephew motivated her to pursue a career as a Direct Support Professional (DSP). Her nephew’s experiences sparked a passion for supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and since then, she has dedicated her life to making a positive difference.
Tanya’s goal is to one day become a teacher, advocate, and leader in the field. She will use her experiences to help others better understand and to be a voice for those she serves and works alongside, creating a more compassionate and informed environment for everyone.
Tanya expressed her gratitude to Springbrook and SUNY Oneonta for the opportunity to take the first step in this journey. She encourages others to follow this rewarding path and emphasizes that the knowledge gained is truly life-changing. Congratulations, Tanya!
Cassandra Mumbulo, a Residential Manager at the Morris community home, earned professional credentials by participating in the DSP I Micro-Credential courses offered through the Springbrook Training & Education Program (STEP).
Cassandra was inspired to participate in this training because she felt it was essential to ensure she upholds the same ethical standards as the staff she leads. As a manager and parent, Cassandra’s motivation came from wanting to set a positive example for her team and children, demonstrating her commitment to professional development and leadership.
Upon completing the program, Cassandra gained a deeper understanding of ethical standards and sharpened her communication skills. These tools help her not only support people but also be a more empathetic leader and parent.
Looking ahead, Cassandra sees this credential as a stepping stone toward her professional goal of obtaining a degree in Human Services. With that degree, she hopes to step into higher leadership roles, allowing her to make a greater impact in the lives of those she supports.
Cassandra highly recommends the DSP Micro-Credential Program to anyone looking to grow in their role and positively influence their team and the people they support. Thank you for your dedication, Cassandra, and congratulations on your success!
