In accordance with the Affordable Care Act, people who do not have access to “affordable” health insurance through their employment may qualify for a premium tax credit to purchase affordable, high-quality coverage on the ACA’s health insurance marketplaces. However, families are ineligible to qualify for this tax credit, because the terms of “affordable” health insurance applies only to the employee. This means that about 5 million families are left without affordable health coverage.
